In their own voice
In a real archive, their voice recording plays here — with an automatic transcript underneath.
The first examiner and I hit a bin. The second one — I still maintain this — closed his eyes at a roundabout out of self-preservation. By the third attempt, the whole test centre knew me by name. When I finally passed, the receptionist came out to the car park and applauded. My father drove home anyway. He said passing was one thing, but he'd need written references before I drove his Rover.
Life story / 25 Dec 2004
Turkey for nine, oven dead by 10am. My mother didn't panic — she marched next door, then the next house, then the next. By noon our close had a relay system going: parsnips at number 12, potatoes at number 8, the bird itself in Mrs Okafor's Aga. Dinner was ninety minutes late and it's the only Christmas anyone still talks about.
