In their own voice
In a real archive, their voice recording plays here — with an automatic transcript underneath.
The January storm that year took fences, greenhouses, and half the roofs on our street. My shed — the third one, the ambitious one — didn't lose a shingle. For years afterwards, whenever anything went wrong in anyone's house, they'd say 'get Arthur, his shed beat the storm.' I never once corrected them that technically it was more of a gale. You don't give back a reputation like that.

A staircase for a doctor's house in Kelvinside. Beautiful oak, three weeks of work. Installed it perfectly — in mirror image. The doctor stood at the bottom for a long moment and said, 'Well, Mr Marsh, it's the finest staircase I've ever seen that goes the wrong way.' I rebuilt it for free and he paid me anyway, and we were friends for thirty years after. Every Christmas card he signed 'from the wrong side of the stairs.'
